**The genesis of the hexameter reconsidered***[ ](/event/indo-european-timothy-barnes)*Friday, September 27 | 4pm | Boylston 103

> Certain peculiarities of the Greek hexameter suggest that this verse is the outcome of an earlier verse form which has undergone various modifications. Several suggestions have been made regarding possible prototypes. The most popular current theory, that of Berg, as modified by Tichy, is inadequate. In my talk I propose a further modification to the Berg-Tichy model. My model accounts for the characteristic internal articulations of the hexameter in a much more straightforward way.
