Harvard at GLOW 40

The following talks featured Harvard presenters at Generative Linguistics in the Old World (GLOW) 40 that took place at Leiden University Centre for Linguistics, March 14-18.

  • Zuzanna Fuchs, with Greg Scontras (PhD 2013) and Maria Polinsky (UMD): "Restructuring in heritage grammars"

  • Yimei Xiang: "Composing questions: A hybrid categorial approach"

Yimei at ILLC

Yimei Xiang gave two invited talks at the Institute for Logic, Language, and Computation (ILLC) in Amsterdam on March 17.  The first, titled "Sensitivity to false answers in interpreting questions under attitudes" was at the Inquisitive Semantics seminar. The second, "Composing complex questions: Multi-wh quesitons and questions with quantifiers", was at the Discourse in Philosophy (DIP) Colloquim.

Linguistics Spring Open House

The Spring Open House for potential concentrators is taking place on Wednesday, March 29, from 5pm to 7pm in Boylston Hall (3rd floor). This is a great opportunity to talk to current concentrators, grad students, and faculty, and learn about linguistics. Everyone is welcome!

Linguistics Department Mind, Brain, Behavior (MBB) award announcements

Kate Davidson has recently been awarded a grant from MBB with Co-PI Jesse Snedeker (Psychology) which will support Annemarie Kocab’s post doctoral research on linguistic complexity  in Nicaraguan Sign Language at the M&M Lab next year.

Gennaro Chierchia has received a “small” MBB grant through which he will sponsor a visiting position in the fall for our own alumnus Greg Scontras (UC Irvine) who will co-teach with Gennaro and Stuart Shieber (Harvard Computer Science) a seminar on the linguistic significance of the probabilistic lambda-calculus.
