In lieu of a formal admission to candidacy examination (“general exam”), Ph.D. students are required to submit and orally defend two research papers of publishable quality. The two generals papers should be in substantially different areas of linguistics. The first paper should ideally be defended by the end of the fall term of the third year, and the second by the end of the spring term of the third year.
